Portraits–are not for you, but for them

steven mastroianni portrait by daughter AntoniaI admit it; I enjoy having my photo taken about as much as anyone, which is, not very much at all. The photo above was taken as part of a personal portrait series of my daughters, who, like me and most of you, also don’t relish having their photos taken. But turnabout is fair play, and I put the camera in my daughter’s hand to prove, in part, that I could take as good as I could give.

It’s not an unnatural reaction, especially when seeing yourself in a photo–like hearing your own voice on a recording; scratching, grating, not what you imagined or hoped. We are self critical, we see the lines, crooked smiles, weird ticks we inherited from relatives, the bulges, the flab, the poor posture and freaked out hair. That’s not me, it’s reversed and strange (yes, we’re used to seeing ourselves reflected back inverted in a mirror, it’s not quite right! Why is my part on the wrong side of my head?). It’s not just you, the reluctance and ambivalence over one’s own photo is the most common reaction I encounter as a professional photographer. Young or old, comely or not so much, it doesn’t really matter, there are not a lot of folks I encounter who are in love with their own image.

But here’s the thing–we don’t make portraits of ourselves for ourselves; we don’t need reminders of what we look like, of our own expressions, we carry those in our selves. We do it for others, for our loved ones, for the curious, for history and for context. That is he, at that moment, at that time, in his life. That is she, as I remember her then, now, or what could have been. This is me, in time, in the world, I was there! They are who they are, guarded or not, open or shy, sad or serious, happy or delirious. Look at the face, look at the clothes, look at the hair and the lips and the funny smile, where were you? Like with any photography, a portrait is “now”. There is no better time, there is only the present, because another time is another photo, a different you.

So this is me, or it was me, for whatever it’s worth. It’s not for me, it’s for them.

Susy and Ron’s Christmastime Wedding at Windows

Susy and Ron chose the Christmas season to celebrate their wedding, and it was quite the colorful celebration. We took advantage of the holiday lights on Public Square in downtown Cleveland, as well as East 4th, and of course decorations at Windows on the River also reflected the season.

Dannielle and Austin’s Wedding at Windows on the River

Dannielle and Austin tied the knot on a beautiful December day in downtown Cleveland. Starting with a photo session at the classic Cleveland landmark, the Arcade, and on scenic East 4th, we proceeded to Windows on the River for the ceremony and reception.

Terri and Tony (aka Kool)

Not every wedding is a lavish event, and not every wedding shoot needs to be an entire document of the day. Such was the case with my old friend and colleague Terri, and her new husband Tony, who tied the knot one early winter afternoon recently. They stopped by my studio for a stylish shoot, with some retro fun thrown in for good measure.

Shelley and Ezra

Shelley and Ezra’s December wedding at the Alcazar Hotel in Cleveland Heights and the downstairs bank vault of Crop Bistro in Ohio City was a low key, intimate celebration centered on family, friends, and good food.

Year in review: Portraits 2012

2012 was a busy year for portraits here, both on location around Cleveland and in our Tremont studio. Families, individuals, corporate, and engagement sessions are all represented in with high lights from last year. Here are a few of my favorites:

Suzanne and Ikey and a beautiful day in the valley

We had the pleasure of catching up with Suzanne and Ikey recently in anticipation of their wedding next year in order to shoot some engagement portraits at the Brecksville Reservation. In spite of the chill, the late autumn sun cast a beautiful glow.

Krystal and David: A preview

A cold, wet weekend leading up to the hurricane dampened plans for extensive outdoor photographs, but Krystal and David celebrated their wedding grand fashion none the less at Amasa Stone Chapel on the campus of CWRU, and The House of Blues in downtown Cleveland.

Sharon and David at the House of Blues

Sharon and David celebrated their wedding on a chilly Autumn day, but that didn’t stop us from grabbing some great shots outside of their reception venue, the House of Blues in Cleveland, which was just a few short blocks from St. John’s Cathedral where they held the ceremony. Of course the biggest moment of the evening was the surprise vocalist–the groom!
