During the better part of a year between 1987 and 1988, I spun on Wednesday and Thursday “alternative” nights at the Nine of Clubs. Very few tapes were made–there was a lot of repetition, so I would often reuse tapes if I wasn’t completely satisfied. The evenings started off low key for the first hour or so, playing atmospheric songs like “Lions” by Tones on Tail, instrumentals, or even some Billie Holiday. After 10pm, the mix was usually a solid progression from around 70 BPMs up to 165 BPMs, then a break followed by a slow restart and second buildup.
Here are two sides of one tape, starting mid-song with Trans Europe Express from Kraftwerk, and the second starting with Pleasure of Love from The Tom Tom Club. Unfortunately, the tape has suffered heat damage and you can hear a clear warp as it plays.
I have one or two other tapes floating around; hopefully I can locate them and get them digitized as well.
